Greta points raised. Loving some of your ideas and Bobby's. Here's my thing: Those big trucks are necessary for the size of the Monday Night bands like Bobby stated. And...and...fancy mas bands as they too revel in the music that size of system offers. What happened to the route that the GCC suggested of going to Grand Anse?? That might curb the problem of the narrow roads. Grand Anse one day and another route heading to the stadium with that type of soca, calypso show after parade of the bands on Tuesday. I really like the idea of a show, and that culmination of days of carnival fun.
The trucks returning was a big problem for me, jumping with Angel Harps and having to move aside for these monstrosities to pass was irritating, but I understand their purpose.
Carnival is not as it was forty years ago and I think we need to stop making that comparison. It is a growing and evolving art that needs nurturing and would constantly need tweaking, the formula of one year does not mean success the next.
The panorama "bomb tune" idea was the brain child of the pan association I believe. (please correct me if I am wrong) the GCC wanted to make sure pan was part of this year's calender and went with the idea to make sure. Panorama wasn't half bad. I agree last year was better. The tribute idea was good, and honestly playing a song that I know and can relate to was a fantastic innovation. How about we have that familiar song and a newly composed piece as panorama next year???
Money is always a problem, I agree and understand that we need more sponsors. But what happen to using the idea like True Masqueraders and Summer Crew and having annual events so you DO NOT depend on subvention??? I think mas players and true cultural activists like these bands need to lend the other bands a page from their book, do it in their own and find sponsors. The hand out thing from government won't always be there. We see how we treasury looking already.
I totally agree with the time thing. But everything moved late. Whose fault? I believe start times for fancy mas was One pm, but they didn't show up or there were issues causing them not to start on time. That part of logistics definitely needs working on.
Time for Spice Mas 2011 committee, whoever they are to get in action. Do poles and questionnaires early and find out the pros and cons of this year'e events and work on it for next year.
Carnival was Good! It can Always be Better!
